AN inmate was killed while 19 others were injured when gang members lobbed a hand grenade inside the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa City on Thursday.
The fatality, Jojo Sampo, died of shrapnel wound from the fragmentation grenade that exploded at 9:55 a.m. at the area being occupied by Commando gang. The explosion occurred at Building 5, which is occupied by Commando gang members.
Bureau of Corrections Director Franklin Bucayu said the grenade was thrown during a skirmish between the Commando and Sputnik gangs.
Inmates and visitors were seen running after the explosion. Authorities have yet to pinpoint who lobbed the grenade.
The 19 injured were rushed to the maximum facility hospital. Eighteen of them were members of Commando gang headed by a certain JV Sebastian. Two of those injured — Alvin Cruz and Arjay Lacdan — are in critical condition and were transferred to the Ospital ng Muntinlupa.
A source told The Manila Times that Sebastian was actually the target of the grenade explosion. Sebastian was not among the injured.
“The Sputnik leadership got jealous because Sebastian was not among those transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI),” a Bucor official, said.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima immediately ordered the NBI to investigate the explosion.
Sebastian, a convicted kidnapper, was not among the high-profile inmates whose ‘kubol’ or cell was spared from the raid conducted by de Lima in December. Illegal drugs, cash, expensive jewelry, guns were seized during the raid.
Also yesterday, NBP Superintendent Richard Schwarzkopf Jr. led his men in confiscating assorted firearms and other contraband. Visitation was suspended and personnel of Muntinlupa City’s Special Weapons and Tactics were allowed to enter the maximum compound to conduct clearing operations.
