A MOTORCYCLE rider died while four others were injured in a multiple vehicle collision along C5-Ortigas flyover in Pasig City on Tuesday.
The lone fatality suffered head and body injuries when he was pinned under a truck.
The four other victims were taken to separate hospitals for treatment.
Based on police investigation, a 10-wheeler truck loaded with sacks of wheat husks lost its break and rammed several vehicles on the northbound lane of the C5-Ortigas flyover at 10:22 a.m.
The truck went out of control while going down the flyover and crossed to the southbound lane, causing a pile-up that involved 18 vehicles consisting of private cars, taxi, a truck, vans and motorcycles.
The truck driver, Juan Mirabuena Esteban, surrendered to the police.
“Medyo, ano, palusong na . . . Medyo alalay ako sa preno. Siyempre aapak ako ng preno, alalay, bigla akong nawalan ng preno. Ayun po ang nangyari (I was descending, so I eased on the brakes. But I had to step on the brakes, but it failed. That’s what happened) Esteban said.
Rescue teams from the Metro Manila Development Authority immediately went to the accident site to help the wounded victims.
The accident forced authorities to close the northbound lane of the Ortigas Flyover, triggering heavy traffic jams.
The vehicles involved in the crash were removed at 1:05 p.m.
