LEGAZPI CITY: Suspected communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels killed a police officer and wounded six others during an ambush of a Philippine National Police (PNP) convoy at about 1 a.m. on Saturday in Labo, Camarines Norte.
Killed was Police Officer (PO)2 Richard Abad. Wounded were PO2 Ronald Gutierrez, PO2 Ericson De Vera, PO1 Jeffrey Tarrobago, PO1 Pedro Valeros, PO1 Romar Umandap and PO1 Johnson Espaṅa, all members of provincial mobile force company assigned in Camarines Norte.
Senior Insp. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, PNP regional spokesman, said the wounded policemen were brought to Camarines Norte provincial hospital for treatment.
She said the policemen were conducting three-day combat operations when an undetermined number of communist rebels attacked the two convoys of law enforcers along Sitio Binuang, Barangay Daguit in Labo.
“The nine-man team of Camarines Norte Police Mobile Force Company, led by PO2 Rommel Orante, on board two patrol vehicles were fired upon by an undetermined number of local communist terrorists during the conduct of the three-day internal security operation,” Calubaquib said.
Police Senior Supt. Cerilo Trilles, Jr, acting provincial director, immediately proceeded to the ambush site to help in the rescue effort and pursue the fleeing communist rebels.
The rebels resumed their attack on government troops in Bicol after President Rodrigo Duterte terminated peace talks with leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front and said the rebels are to be classified as terrorists.
