ZAMBOANGA CITY : One person died and at least a dozen other people were injured on Wednesday after a speeding passenger jeepney rammed a concrete pole before rolling over to its side on a village in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said. The impact of the crash tore open the metal roof of the jeepney and pinned the head of one passenger, Romualdo Antonio, 30, who died while being treated at the hospital. Three other passengers who were sitting on top of the jeep were also thrown several meters away, critically injuring one of them. The jeep’s driver Jan Michael Fabian fled the accident scene only to surrender later to the police. The driver said he tried to avoid an oncoming motorcycle and stepped on the brakes causing the vehicle to slip out of control and hit the concrete pole.
