• 100 WVisayas areas high risk for landslide, floods


    ILOILO CITY: The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) regional office here has identified about 100 cities and municipalities in Western Visayas considered high risk for landslides and floods as a mitigation scheme to alert these areas during strong typhoons, especially with the incoming La Niña.

    MGB regional director Leo Van Juguan said that the province of Iloilo has 24 danger areas, particularly high-risk towns for landslides and floodings, notably Concepcion, a coastal municipality. Also threatened with landslides are the towns of Leon, San Joaquin, Tubungan, Igbaras, Miagao, Lambunao, Calinog, Alimodian and Janiuay.

    Landslides and flooding also jeopardize the municipalities of Jordan, Buenavista, Nueva Valencia and San Lorenzo, while floodings may occur in Sibunag.

    Flooding endangers Iloilo City, Dumangas, Oton, Guimbal, Zarraga, Banate, Leganes, Pavia, San Rafael, Tigbauan, Carles, Ajuy, San Enrique and Estancia.

    In Negros Occidental, the towns of Don Salvador Benedicto, Kabankalan City and Moises Padilla are threatened with landslides and floodings, while La Castellana, Calatrava, Isabela, Pontevedra, Murcia, Cauayan, Candoni, Cadiz City, San Carlos City, Kabankalan City, and Silay City are prone to landslides.

    The towns of Pulupandan, Binalbagan, Valladolid, Manapla, Bago City, Hinigaran and EB Magalona are at risk of floods.

    Over in the province of Antique, the towns with high risk of landslide and floods are Valderrama, San Remigio, Lauaan, Anini-y, Sebaste, Pandan and Libertad. Floodings may also occur in Tobias Fornier, Patnongon, Barbaza, Hamtic, Caluya, Tibiao, Belison, San Jose , Sibalom and Culasi.

    The province of Capiz recorded vulnerable towns with high risk for landslide such as Tapaz, Jamindan, Pres. Roxas and Pilar, while landslide and floods threatened Cuartero, Dumarao, Dumalag, Mambusao, Dao and Sapian. Floodings put at risk Sigma, Pontevedra, Panit-an, Panay and Maayon.

    In Aklan province, 14 municipalities are at risk of landslide and floods – Balete, Buruanga, Madalag, Malinao, Ibajay, Tangalan, Libacao and Batan, while the towns of Nabas and Malay are endangered for landslides. Numancia, New Washington, Kalibo and Lezo are threatened with floods.
