ZAMBOANGA CITY: The Philippine Army said 11 Abu Sayyaf members surrendered on Monday in Basilan where security forces are battling the group tied to the Islamic State.
The bandits – Ring Langka, Tari and Halid Murasimin, Moton Indama, Haimin Jalil, Marham Musana, Sadjara Hadjarama, Gulam Hajim, Haraward Sahirulla, Basri Laisun and Hasim Baliyung – reportedly surrendered in Sumisip town.
They also handed over assorted weapons, including a machine gun and rifle grenades.
It was not immediately known whether those who surrendered will be charged in court since the Abu Sayyaf Group is not included in the government amnesty program.
Many armed bandits had surrendered in the past decades in Basilan, but eventually returned to their group to fight government forces again in pursuit of their aspiration for the establishment of an Islamic homeland in southern Mindanao.
