Thirteen tankers from the Western Visayas Region have qualified for the Summer World University Games after their impressive showing in the 84th Philippine Swimming League (PSL) National Series Swimming Championship held at the Aklan Provincial Sports Complex in Makato, Aklan.

Gwangju Universiade veterans Rose Mary Occeno of John B. Lacson Maritime University and Cyra Dawn Montano of Aklan Swimming Team led the list of the qualifiers along with Kobe Soguilon of Aklan and Alic Deniel Dela Cruz of Capiz.

Also earning berths in the prestigious world meet were Krisha Ame of Capiz Turbo Shark Swim Club; Laira Faye Enero of Aklan Swimming Team; Jeah Faith Pamunag and Robert Villanueva of Poseidon Swim Club; and Jaymee Bungcasan, Andrew Joven, Michael Novem Jarder, Karl Joshua Perlas and Edelyn Villareal of John B. Lacson Swim Team.

The 28th edition of the World Summer University Games will be held in New Taipei City in Taiwan in 2017.

“These are the lucky swimmers who have qualified to the World Summer University Games. We are opening the door to all talented swimmers in the country as we want these young swimmers to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity competing against the world’s best in an Olympic-style competition,” said PSL President Susan Papa.

“Some of them have already experienced competing in the Universiade last July in Gwangju, South Korea pero sumali ulit sila sa qualifying tournament dahil gusto nilang bumalik at muling ma-experience ang Universiade,” added Papa.

Aklan Swimming Team, meanwhile, bagged the overall championship title after collecting 1,711 points while John B. Lacson Swim Team settled for second with 883 points.

Capiz Turbo Shark Swim Team copped the third place honors (793) followed by Poseidon Swim Club (773), Malinao Swim Team (187), Aklan Scientific Sports Allian (74), Sarangani Bay Waves (69), British School of Manila (55) and Academy of Holistic Learning (50).

“Nothing can be of gauge of a true and better athlete if character and attitude can not be handled wisely. Sport is based on time but personality is base on who we really are especially in times of competition on strategy and focus,” PSL Secretary General Maria Susan Benasa added.

PSL is a national sports swimming association for Universities and Colleges accredited by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines, internationally affiliated member of Federation of International Sports University.
