Davao Del Norte: While the Department of Education announced on Friday that the 2015 Palarong Pambansa would start on May 4 instead of May 3 to support boxing icon Manny Pacquiao’s bout against Floyd May¬weather, some Palaro events will start today.
Set to start today are competitions in arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics, sepak takraw, softball, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
A total of 1,021 medals are at stake in this year’s Palaro featuring 17 sporting events —140 gold medals in the elementary division and 175 in the high school division.
There will be no boxing competition in the elementary division.
The National Capital Region Athletic Association is the reigning overall champion after winning 107 gold, 64 silver and 56 bronze medals last year in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.
Calabarzon finished second with a gold-silver-bronze medal tally of 38-51-51 while Western Visayas finished third with 32-33-38.
This year’s host Davao finished eighth with 10-20-21.
The formal opening ceremony will be held on Monday at 4 p.m.
