More than 150 passengers were stranded along Punta Cruz Point in Maribojoc town in Bohol province after the propeller of a steel-hulled passenger vessel broke down in the middle of the ship’s journey, the Philippine Coast Guard announced on Tuesday.
A report from Coast Guard K-9 in Central Visayas said that MV Weesam 7 encountered an engine trouble while it was sailing to Cebu City. The report explained that the ships starboard propeller accidentally loosened from the ship’s shaft causing a major problem. The report added that 158 passengers of the ship were stranded because of the said malfunction.
The crew of the ship immediately asked for assistance from Coast Guard Station (CGS) in Tagbilaran City. CGS-Tagbilaran sought the assistance of CGS Cebu and asked for a possible dispatch.
CGS Cebu assisted MV Weesam 7 until the passenger ship arrived safely at Pier 4 of the Port of Cebu.
There were no reported injuries or other health complaints from the 158 passengers and 12 crew of the ship. However, Captain Danielito Gavas, Weesam’s captain, was advised to file a Marine Protest, undergo MARINA inspection, and to secure a Certificate of Seaworthiness in order for the ship to resume its operations.
