A SIXTEEN-year-old boy was shot dead on Tuesday morning by a Philippine Marine sergeant during a religious feast in Taytay town in Northern Palawan, police reports said on Wednesday. Police investigators identified the victim as Enrique Mendez, a resident of Brgy. Calawag, Taytay, Palawan, while the suspect was Staff Sergeant Alchier Mansing of the 44th Marine Company of the 4th Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT-4). Mansing was part of a contingent from the Paglaum detachment and was sent to secure the celebration of the feast of the Northern Palawan Institute of Iglesia Filipina Independiente. Initial reports said that three men arrived in the festivity area and taunted the marine sergeant by showing him plastic sachets of suspected ‘shabu’, which led into a struggle and ending with the marine shooting the victim. The boy was reportedly hit on his left shoulder, neck and chest and died on the spot. His two companions fled after the shooting. The reports also said that responding policemen recovered from the crime scene some slugs and a caliber .45 pistol. Mansing reportedly surrendered to his detachment commander after the shooting.
