Close to 200 inmates escaped from the provincial jail in Palo, Leyte, dawn Thursday.
Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Sr. Supt. Wilben Mayor said 148 of the 184 inmates that bolted the jail have been recaptured.
“There are still 34 inmates unaccounted and are now the subject of pursuit operation by our tracker team in Leyte,” Mayor said.
The jail had 431 inmates at the time of the escape, he said.
Mayor said some of the inmates had been complaining that they were not getting enough food, the deplorable condition in the facility and the slow progress of their cases.
