2 communist rebels killed in Camarines Sur clash


LEGAZPI CITY: Two communist insurgents were killed while another was captured following a clash with military forces in a remote village in Caramoan town, Camarines Sur on Monday.

Army Col. Claudio Yucot, commanding officer of the Army’s 901st Infantry Brigade said that his men were on combat operations when they encountered 14 members of the communist insurgents at 10:20 in the morning in Sitio Panag, Barangay Gibgos, Caramoan.

The ensuing 15-minute firefight resulted in the killing of two rebels and the capture of one, Yucot said.

No one was hurt from the government side.

The government forces also recovered three M16 rifles, a M653 carbine rifle, a M203 grenade launcher, three backpacks, three IEDs and subversive documents from the encounter site.

Southern Luzon (SolCom) commanding general Ricardo R. Visaya, meanwhile, said that the armed forces in region are on alert, not only for the upcoming national and local elections but also for all other security threats.

“Our election preparations shall not be made as excuse for us not to hit the NPAs. On the contrary, hitting them is a vital component of our election preparations,” he said.

The PNP regional command in the Bicol region and the Armed Forces of the Philippines are in close coordination to ensure honest and peaceful election in the region specifically that the island province of Masbate was placed under the Comelec watch list.
