2 dead, 54 injured in Zamboanga bombing

DAVAO CITY: Philippine authorities have put extra security in Zamboanga City following a deadly bombing that killed two and also wounded 54 people.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Salazar has confirmed that two people died from the Friday attack that happened just outside a disco bar and bus terminal. Salazar said authorities continue to investigate the real cause and motive of the explosion that killed Reynaldo Tan, 39; and Dennis Valente, 33.

“I call on the people to remain vigilant, but calm and to continuously support and cooperate with authorities by reporting the presence of suspicious persons and items in their vicinity,” she said.

“Zamboanga will carry on with this fight against lawlessness and terrorism. We have enough military forces to thwart further eventualities,” she said.

The attack occurred even as police and military tightened security in Zamboanga following a botched plan by Abu Sayyaf rebels to rescue imprisoned members there. At least 57 Abu Sayyaf fighters are being held at the local prison.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the latest bombing but police and military suspect the Abu Sayyaf could be behind the blast.
