A plantation supervisor and a militiaman were killed on Tuesday in a landmine explosion in a rubber plantation in Sumisip town, Basilan. Reports reaching the Philippine National Police National Operation Center in Camp Crame in Quezon City identified the fatalities as Boy Balal, supervisor of Mangal Agragrian Reform Beneficiaries Development Cooperative, and a “Undah,” a militiaman. The explosion occurred around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday while a group of militiaman was conducting ground clearing works at the rubber plantation when the victim accidentally stepped on the device, believed to be planted by members of the Abu Sayyaf Group, that set off a powerful explosion. Undah died instantly while Balal died hours later.
