2 hurt as crane topples cars, electric posts


TWO persons were slightly injured when a giant tower crane in a private construction site collapsed and fell on passing vehicles along H.V. de la Costa Street, Makati City (Metro Manila) on Thursday morning. Cab driver Ramon Soletario and cyclist Romeo Lopez suffered minor injuries from the accident that occurred at about 7:50 a.m. Makati City police said the victims were brought to the nearby Makati Medical Center and A.M. Oreta Construction Company, contractor of Salcedo SkySuites building, promised to shoulder the medical expenses. The accident also caused affected residents and offices in the area as the crane toppled two telecommunication poles, five electric posts and some high tension wires, knocking out power in Salcedo and Urdaneta villages. Meralco said the repair of damaged equipment took more than five hours. Makati City Mayor Romulo Peña Jr. directed the Office of the Building Official to stop the construction while the investigation is underway.
