TWO persons died while 14 others were injured when a delivery truck collided with four vehicles in Marikina City before noon Wednesday.
Ediso John Reyes, an engineering student of the Technological Institute of the Philippines, and Domingo Salvador died on the spot when a 10-wheeler truck rammed a passenger jeepney, two L300 vans, and a motorcycle along Bonifacio Avenue in Barangay Barangka, Marikina City. The two victims sustained massive head and body injuries.
Police said the impact was so great that Reyes was thrown off the passenger jeepney. Salvador, who was riding the motorcycle, was also thrown several meters away.
Rescuers had to extricate the driver of the truck, Fernando Gemira, 43, who was pinned down the dashboard.
The truck driver lost control of the vehicle while descending the flyover from the Katipunan-Aurora Avenue area. To avoid crashing into a sea of vehicles, he decided to enter a side street but rammed into two L-300 vans, a passenger jeepney, and a motorcycle.
The injured victims were taken to the Amang Rodriguez Hospital.
Eastern Police District (EPD) director Senior Supt. Elmer Jamias ordered the filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide and multiple physical injuries and damage to property against Gemira, who is now being guarded 24/7 to prevent his escape from his hospital bed.
