Two soldiers were injured early Saturday after a two-vehicle marine convoy was hit by improvised explosive device (IED) planted on the roadside in a remote village in Sulu, officials said.
Western Mindanao Command (Westcom) spokesman Col. Rodrigo Gregorio said the explosion occured at 6:30 a.m. in Sitio Tuwak, Barangay Bonbon, Patikul.
Gregorio identified the two wounded soldiers as Sgt. Almandres Muhajil and Cpl. Antonio Docdo, both from the Marine Battalion Landing Team 11 of the 2nd Marine Brigade.
Gregorio said the Marines were in an M35 truck backed by a V-150 armored personnel carrier on their way to Barangay Tangantangan also in Patikul, a known bastion of al-Qaeda linked Islamic militants.
“The troops were tasked to secure the scheduled Medical Civic Action Program at Barangay Tangan-Tangan,” Gregorio said.
Docdoc was airlifted for further medical treatment at a station hospital in Barangay Bus-bus in Patikul, while Muhajil was treated at the Bonbon marine detachment. ANTHONY VARGAS
