Two swimmers reached the Universiade qualifying marks during the 86th Philippine Swimming League (PSL) National Series dubbed as the Baguio Halloween Swim Meet held at the Athletic Bowl Swimming Pool Complex in Baguio City.
Angela Faith Chia of Baguio Penguins Swim Club and Nathan Angelo Retuta of Wesleyan College of Manila made it to the initial list of qualifiers for the Summer World University Games to be held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2017.
“We’ll be back in Baguio maybe next year to give others a chance to qualify in the Summer World University Games. Out final tryouts will be held next year as we want to finalize our lineup for the Taipei Universiade ahead of time,” PSL President Susan Papa said.
So far, more than 80 tankers from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao have already qualified to the World University Games. The PSL aims to send a total of 96 tankers – 48 men and 48 women – to surpass the country’s 45-tanker delegation in the 2015 edition held in Gwangju, South Korea last July.
“Competing in the Universiade is a once in a lifetime experience and I want these kids to experience that. We are opening the doors to these young kids. Open ang tryouts namin, lahat pwedeng sumali, walang restrictions,” stressed Papa.
Meanwhile, the Baguio Penguins Swim Club bagged the overall championship crown after amassing 766 points while Wesleyan College of Manila settled for second with 566 points and Pasig City Swimming League wound up third with 442 points.
