TWO police officers were wounded after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off along the national highway in a remote village in Guindulungan town in Maguindanao on Friday night, the army said Saturday.
Capt. Joann Petinglay, spokesperson of Army’s 6th Infantry Division (ID) in Maguindanao, identified the victims in the roadside explosion as Police Officer 2 Abdurhaman Lampak and Police Officer 3 Modaire Salibo.
The victims and five other police officers, detailed with Guindulungan Municipal Police Station (MPS), were patrolling along the national highway in Sitio Sawmill, Barangay Bagan when the bomb went off, followed by a volley of gunfire from unidentified men.
A firefight ensued that lasted for about 40 minutes that ended only when reinforcing troops from the Army’s 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion arrived.
Petinglay said bomb experts recovered fragments of a rifle grenade, cut nails, and mobile phones, indicating a device similar to those manufactured by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) against government forces in nearby Datu Salibo town also in Maguindanao.
