LEGAZPI CITY: The National Nutrition Council (NNC) reported that among the six provinces in the Bicol region, Catandaunes and Camarines Sur have the highest number of undernourished children.
“Catanduanes is the topnotcher this year with high incidence of malnutrition cases followed by Camarines Sur,” Marilyn Valeza, nutrition officer of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Bicol told The Manila Times.
She added that more than a decade Camarines Sur had a high prevalence of malnourished children beginning from pre-school to elementary level.
Valeza said the province of Camarines Sur had a lesser number of undernourished children this year because many villages lacked barangay health workers so they were not able to conduct operation timbang.
Among the seven cities of Bicol, Masbate City had the highest prevalence of malnourished preschool children with 2,278 cases or 13.67 percent out of 16,666 total weighed.
The poor nutritional status in Bicol, according to the NNC official, is directly linked to high incidence of poverty which is still a primary concern that has to be addressed by local government units.
