TWO New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and a soldier were killed while another was wounded during an encounter in Hinobaan, Negros Occidental on Friday, reports said.
Members of the Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion and 3rd Infantry Division were conducting community security patrol in Sitio Bugtong Lubi, Barangay Damutan in Hinobaan, when about 12 NPA guerrillas fired at them at around 7:40 a.m.
Killed in the 15-minute firefight were Corporal Jonathan Egaran and two unidentified rebels.
The wounded soldier – Corporal Melbin Legaspi – has been declared in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
Lt. Col. Harold Anthony Pascua, 79th IB commander, said that prior to the encounter, residents in the area reported the alleged extortion activities of the rebels.
“Our troops encountered the remnants of the NPA bandits following the report of the residents on the presence of lawless armed elements in their community,” he said.
Recovered from the scene following the gun battle were an M-653 baby armalite rifle, two rifle grenades, a magazine with live ammunitions, personal belongings and subversive documents.
