2 RoRo passengers hospitalized after Bacolod port collision

Two passengers of a roll-on roll-off (RoRo) ship were rushed to the hospital after it accidentally hit the Bolado Port in Bacolod Wharf, Guihulngan town, Negros Occidental.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Wednesday that throttle of the M/V Island Roro 1 broke down while it was docking. The out-of-control vessel then collided with the port.

The Coast Guard Detachment in Guihulngan reported that the throttle’s air control valve had just been repaired. The ship’s engineer said the valve broke down because of extreme pressure.

The Coast Guard said two of the ship’s 47 passengers were taken to hospital after sustaining trauma.

They were identified as Emma Espacio, 31 and Benjie Lumod, 30, both residents of Barangay Anisalag Hill, Guihulngan.

The Coast Guard advised the ship’s captain to repair the throttle and coordinate with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Regional Office VII before sailing again.

The MV Island Roro 1 is owned and operated by Island Shipping Corporation.
