• 2 Sayyaf men linked to kidnappings fall

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Another Abu Sayyaf rebel was arrested in Sulu on Thursday, a day after one of his comrades was collared in this city, officials said.

Jamil Kahil, 35, was cornered by authorities in the village of Buan in Panglima Sugala town, and is now being interrogated by the police.

Kahil’s capture came after security forces arrested another Abu Sayyaf rebel – Munap Saimaran – in Zamboanga City on Wednesday.

Saimaran was implicated in many kidnapping cases, including the cross-border raid in Malaysia’s resort island of Sipadan in Sabah in 2000.

Saimaran’s group supposedly kidnapped 21 people, mostly European and Asian holidaymakers, at the island resort and ransomed them off to Malaysia and Libya for millions of dollar.

Last year, police also captured Ibni Acosta, who headed the Abu Sayyaf urban terrorist group, in his hideout in Tungawan town in Zamboanga Sibugay province. He was supposedly involved in the Sipadan kidnappings.
