2 soldiers dead in Samar ambush


Catbalogan City: Two soldiers were killed while three others were wounded when armed men waylaid them on Friday night along Maharlika Highway between Barangays Socorro and Lagundi. Killed in the ambush were Corporal Chelito Edera and Sgt. Christopher Joey Campos. Authorities, however, have not yet disclosed the names of the wounded. The soldiers were on board a KM450 Humvee coming from Camp Lukban, in Maulong, Catbalogan City last night and were on their way to Barangay Dau, Oras, Eastern Samar when a landmine exploded. This was followed by bursts of gunfire. As of press time, it is not yet known how many soldiers were on board. The police said the soldiers were transporting the salary of the 14th Infantry Battalion worth about P2 million. A hot pursuit operations is being conducted by the responding military force as officials have yet to identify the group behind the ambush.
