• 2 soldiers slain, 3 others wounded in Kalinga encounter


    UPI, Gamu, Isabela: Two Philippine Army soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in an encounter with communist guerrillas at a far flung mountain village in Tabuk City in Kalinga province according to reports on Saturday.

    Reports identified the slain Army soldiers as Cpl. Dominador Concordia and Pfc. Rey Raagas; among the wounded were 2nd Lt. Czar Carsido and Pfcs Marnel Langnga and Kennedy Sallaya.

    First Lt. Rowena Abayon, 5th Infantry Division (5th) Public Affairs Officer, said the soldiers were from the 17th Infantry Battalion based at Camp Melchor F Dela Cruz here who where on security operations in Sitio Tumiangan, Barangay Dupag when the encounter ensued on Friday at about 1:40 pm.

    Abayon said they were responding to an information from civilians about the presence of undetermined number of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels roaming and conducting extortion activities in the said village.

    Citing villagers’ account of the fierce exchange of gunfire, Abayon said they have seen NPA rebels carrying with them their undetermined number of casualties while withdrawing.
