2 soldiers slain in clash with rebels

FRESH encounter has erupted between government troops and members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in the rebel-infested province of Surigao del Sur that resulted in the death of two soldiers.

Maj. Leo Bongosia, spokesman, Fourth Infantry Division, on Tuesday said the encounter took place at Sitio Tibog, Barangay San Isidro in Lianga town at around 2 p.m. and lasted for five minutes.

The slain soldiers belong to the 29th Infantry Battalion (IB) that was then conducting a pursuit operation in the hinterland barangay when they encountered an undetermined number of heavily armed rebels.

“A firefight ensued that resulted in the killing of two Army troopers while there were no reports of casualty on NPA side,” Bongosia said.

He declined to identify the killed soldiers pending notification of their families.

Last week, three members of the 29th IB were also killed by a landmine in Sito Buhisan, San Agustina, Surigao del Sur while trying to capture a rebel training camp.

Bongosia said that they have launched a series of operations against the NPA.
