TACLOBAN CITY: Two hospitals here are now operational even as the Department of Health (DOH) is negotiating with other private hospitals to allow the government to operate their health facilities.
DOH Assistant Secretary Dr. Paulyn Jean Jubial said Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center and the Remedios T. Romualdez Hospital are now open to serve residents.
Divine World Hospital (St. Paul Hospital) was also expected to open on Friday while Our Lady of Mercy Hospital will start to operate either Friday or Saturday
Jubial said the private hospitals will be run by medical teams from various international humanitarian organizations.
Jubial added that to avoid possible congestion of hospitals in Tacloban City, the DOH is working on opening the district hospitals in Leyte and Samar provinces.
These include Palo Provincial Hospital in Pawing, Palo, the district hospitals in Baybay City, Ormoc City, Burauen and Abuyog, all in Leyte. In Samar, the Basey District Hospital will be managed by Bicol Medical Center. The Guiuan Municipal Hospital will also operate to cater to Eastern Samar victims.
Jubial stressed that there is no disease outbreak in the region based on the ongoing rapid health assessment. Cases were treated that included the vaccination of tetanus toxoid to prevent tetanus.
