Some 200 armed men attacked a school in North Cotabato early Wednesday, according to a local official in a live radio interview.
Mayor Eliseo Garsesa of Pigcawayan said the men, suspected to be members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), swooped down on the village of Malagasit, 660 kilometers north of Marawi City, which has been under siege from the Maute terrorist group for close to a month.
Garsesa said that as of posting time, the military has sent troops to the area and were currently engaging the Islamist fighters.
Asked whether the military and local officials were aware of the attack, Garsesa said that there were intelligence reports circulating through text messages Tuesday night that the “armed groups were coming”.
Garsesa said, however, that authorities have been receiving a lot of similar text messages, which needed to be verified.
No one has been reported hurt in the incident.
Garsesa said Pigcawayan was composed of Christian and Muslim residents who lived together in peace.
