2016’s most streamed artists



    The music landscape is indeed changing. Unlike years past when you have to buy those precious cassette tapes and CDs to get your music, now all you have to do is go online to listen to your favorite songs and albums. Technology definitely changed the way people listen to music that it can now be one’s own personal radio.

    With dwindling CD sales nowadays—as millennials rarely go to record stores—music streaming keeps record labels and artists afloat save for some issues regarding royalty (but that’s a different story).

    The most popular of which, Spotify, recently announced 2016’s most popular albums, songs and artists that modern-day music aficionados are listening to.



    Canadian rapper Drake tops the worldwide list as the Most Streamed Artist for 2016 with over 4.7 billion streams, beating his own record of 1.8 billion streams last year. In fact, he is the most streamed artist since the inception of Spotify with over 8.7 billion streams. Additionally, Drake’s single “One Dance” was the Most Streamed Track for 2016 with over 970 million streams. With this feat, the track has overtaken last year’s winner Lean On by Major Lazer (ft. MØ and DJ Snake), as the most popular song ever on Spotify.

    Drake further dominated the list as Most Streamed Album for 2016. After dropping Views in April, his album has racked up over 2.45 billion streams on Spotify.

    Following Drake is Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Charlie Puth and One Direction.

    Ex-One Direction member Zayn became the worldwide top breakout artist after releasing his first solo record this year.

    In the Philippines, there is no denying the popularity of the American DJ duo The Chainsmokers being the most streamed artist. Filipinos likewise listened to their singles namely “Closer,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” and “Roses” way more than other tracks, dominating the Top 5 Most Streamed Tracks for 2016.
