Malacanang on Friday denied that it ordered the exclusion of two Special Action Force (SAF) commandos involved in the Mamasapano operation from the list of awardees during the 114th police service anniversary attended by President Benigno Aquino 3rd on Friday.
“The Office of the President has no participation in the selection of police officers and individuals that were given recognition in connection with the 114th anniversary of the Philippine National Police (PNP),” Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a statement.
Reports said Aquino did not want a reminder of the police operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao in January 25 where 44 police commandos were killed. The Presidential Management Staff ordered the PNP to strike out those involved in the Mamasapano tragedy from the list of awardees.
But Coloma said the proposed awards for PO2 Romeo Cempron and Supt. Raymund Train should be studied thoroughly because the Medal of Valor is the highest service award bestowed on police and military members.
“According to the PNP, the evaluation process for the proposed giving of the Medal of Valor requires a lengthy process and a thorough evaluation, for which reason the review could not be completed on time despite our best efforts,” Coloma said. CATHERINE S. VALENte
