3 Chinese ships intrude into Japanese waters near disputed islands

NAHA, Japan –Three Chinese coast guard vessels entered Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea on Sunday morning, the Japan Coast Guard said.

The intrusion was the fifth this year, following one on Monday, and the 79th since Japan purchased some of the uninhabited islands from a private Japanese owner in September 2012.

The Japanese-controlled islets are claimed by China and Taiwan, which call the islands Diaoyu and Tiaoyutai, respectively.
