3 moderate quakes jolt W. Samar, Davao, Marinduque

Mild earthquakes shook the provinces of Western Samar, Davao occidental and Marinduque on Monday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the first quake with a magnitude of 3.1 occurred at 1:22 a.m.

The epicenter of the quake was traced some 17 kilometers southwest of Calbayog City in Western Samar.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 70 kilometers.

The second quake with a magnitude 4.5 occurred around 2:50 a.m. with epicenter traced some 38 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 129 kilometers.

On the other hand, the other tremor with a magnitude of 3.0 happened at 4:41 a.m.. Phivolcs said its epicenter was estimated 18 kilometers northeast of Boac in Marinduque.

Phivolcs said the temblor, which was tectonic in origin, had a shallow depth of five kilometers.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said there was no casualty or damage reported from the three tremors.

It added that no aftershocks are expected from from these quakes.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 20 to 25 earthquakes per day — mostly imperceptible — are common, Phivolcs said. PNA
