SANTA CRUZ, Ilocos Sur: Three members of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered recently to the officers here at the headquarters of the Philippine Army’s 7th Infantry Division. Lt. Col. Eugenio Julio Osias 4th, head of the Division’s 81st Infantry Battalion, identified the surrenderers only as alias “Ka Winter,” “KaSomer” and “Ka Paul” for security reasons pending the processing of their status. The NPA cadres now make 11 surrenderers here during the first semester of 2017. A statement of the rebels obtained by The Manila Times showed that among the reasons they surrendered were hard life in the mountains – scarce food and the rainy season – and the Army’s assistance to former rebels through the government’s Comprehensive Local Integration Program. Maj. Gen. Angelito De Leon, commander of the 7th Infantry Division, commended the surrenderers for their decision to lay down their arms in exchange for a peaceful life with their families.
