Former world champion Francisco ‘Django’ Bustamante toppled Nikos Malaj of Greece, 11-9, and Robert Cord of US, 11-6, while Warren Kiamco followed suit as he beat Dana Aft of US, 11-2, and Waleed Majid of Qatar, 11-8.
Unheralded Rodrigo Geronimo also made his presence felt by shocking Ali Al Marri of Qatar, 11-5, and Marc Vidal of Spain, 11-10, in the tournament that employs a double-elimination format
Bustamante will be next meeting John Morra of Canada, an 11-6 winner over Joe Dupus of US while Kiamco faces Jonathan Pinegar of US, who had an 11-2 victory over compatriot Larry Phlegar, and Geromino battles Ernesto Dominguez of Mexico, who stunned world titlist Ralf Souquet of Germany, 11-7.
Israel Rota was the first Filipino casualty after losing to Americans Tommy Kennedy (3-11) and Adam Smith (7-11).
The other Filipinos in the tournament are Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, Dennis Orcollo and Jose Parica, who were scheduled to play late Wednesday.
Reyes faces Parica and Orcollo takes on American Troy Miller.
