THREE suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in separate encounters with government forces in Camarines Sur late Monday afternoon.
Maj. Virgilio Perez, spokesperson of the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division (9th ID) said the military operation also resulted in the confiscation of several high-powered firearms and improvised explosives device (IEDs).
Perez said the encounter with at least 30 rebels occured at about 5:55 p.m. on Monday following combat operations conducted by the division reconnaissance company of the 9th ID in Barangay San Rafael, Lupi, Camarines Sur.
Security forces also recovered an M-50 machinegun, a KG-9 sub-machinegun, an M-16 rifle, several ammunitions, a bandolier and several IEDs. An M-14 rifle was also found in a separate operation in nearby Barangay Belwang, also in Lupi.
Prior to the firefight in Lupi, Perez said elements of the Army’s 83rd Infantry Battalion encountered a band of NPA guerrillas in Barangay Antalon, Caramoan also in Camarines Sur that resulted in the killing of a rebel.
The military found two M-16 rifles, an M-203 grenade launcher, a bandolier, several ammunition and magazines.
They have yet to determine the identities of the slain rebels.
Lt. Gen. Ricardo Visaya, commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Southern Luzon Command (Solcom) has ordered the troops to intensify the anti-insurgency operations in the region.
