Thirty-three tankers led by Martin Jacob Pupos reached the qualifying standards set by the Philippine Swimming League (PSL) for the 2017 Summer World University Games to be held in Taipei, Taiwan.
Pupos, a multi-gold medalist in the Indian Ocean All Star Challenge and Singapore Invitational Swimming Championship, and other qualifiers were selected based on their impressive showing in the recently-concluded 80th Philippine Swimming League (PSL) National Series dubbed as the Vice Mayor Isko Moreno Top 16 Long Course Swimming Meet held at the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool in Vito Cruz, Manila.
“The Philippine Swimming League is preparing this early to be able to give chance to as many swimmers as we can to experience the amazing World Universiade Games 2017 to be held in Taipei,” said PSL President Susan Papa.
Gwangju Universiade veterans Jason Difuntorum, Marvin Paralisan, Raymund Sevilla and Jan Vincent Llaguno also made it to the initial list along with Allysa Alano, Jorene Alarilla, Aerbeen Almoneda, Bryan Antonio, Ernest Arceo, Nhelliza Bautista, Patrick Bormate, Leichelle Buenaventura, Alfred Conda, Ryan Dimayuga, Malachi Enero, Mara Hilado, Loenard Licudo, Randy Llantino, Luis Lucero and Alonzo Magadia.
“I received a lot of messages from parents and swimmers themselves thanking PSL and Fessap for giving them an opportunity for the exposure they will never forget in their entire life,” added Papa.
The other qualifiers were Sean Manicad, Carmenrose Matabuena, Angel Medrano, Joana Obang, Sam Ongjoco, Edryl Reyes, Macy Reyes, Alliah Saliendra, Chedie Seguera, Miku Tanaka, Martina Villanueva and Aubrey Ybanez.
“For PSL it is not actually the winning but it is how to give and perform the best of themselves. It is about touching their lives and changing them through the beautiful experience of World Universiade Games. I thank Graham Lim for stepping up and the support of Senator Nikki Coseteng and PSL board members and parents,” Papa stressed.
The PSL will be going to Davao and Bicol for another series of Taiwan Universiade tryouts.
The first stop will be in Davao del Norte for the 2015 PSL Davao Swim Meet at the Tagum City Sports Complex on August 5 followed by the 3rd El Presidente Swim Cup on August 22 at the Mariner’s Polytechnic Colleges Foundation Pool in Legazpi City.
The PSL is a national sports swimming association for Universities and Colleges accredited by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (Fessap), internationally affiliated member of Federation of International Sports University (FISU).
