Andre Owens and Al Thornton carried 3’s Company past Killer 3s, 51-48, to stay on the hunt for a playoff spot in the BIG3 3-on-3 basketball league at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on Sunday (Monday in Manila).
Owens sizzled with a team-best 20 points highlighted by a pair of triples while former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) import Thornton chalked 15 markers as 3’s Company improved to a 3-4 win-loss record.
DerMarr Johnson chipped in 10 points in the win as playing coach Allen Iverson did not play anew due to a one-game suspension.
Stephen Jackson notched a game-high 25 points and ex-star playmaker Chauncey Billups added 10 but their outputs fell short of saving Killer 3’s from getting eliminated.
Meanwhile, Trilogy stayed unbeaten in the seventh week of action as it pulled off a come-from-behind 50-45 victory over Power.
Trailing behind in the first half, 14-25, Rashad McCants came alive in the final half as he poured eight of Trilogy’s first 10 points en route to leading his team to its seventh win in as many games.
McCants wound up with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, including a four-point shot, while Al Harrington and James White contributed 14 and 12 markers, respectively.
DeShawn Stevenson finished with a team-high 19 points highlighted by five treys and Cuttino Mobley had 17 markers for Power, which failed to secure a playoff seat as it dropped to 4-3.
In the first game, Tri-State stunned Ghost Ballers, 51-43, behind its three players in double-digit scoring.
Bonzi Wells posted 18 points, Dominic McGuire scored 13 markers and Lee Nailon had 12 for the also-ran Trilogy, which spoiled Ghost Ballers’ semifinals bid with its second win in seven outings.
Ricky Davis tallied a team-high 15 points and former PBA reinforcement Ivan Johnson had 14 markers for the Ghost Ballers, who fell to 3-4 and squandered a chance to strengthen their bid for a final four entry.
In the final game, playoff-bound 3 Headed Monsters pulverized cellar-dweller Ball Hogs, 50-34.
Rashard Lewis starred once again as the former National Basketball Association All-Star cager topscored with 17 points and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf added 14 markers for 3 Headed Monsters, who cruised to a six-game winning streak.
Derrick Byars turned out to be the lone double-digit scorer with 11 points for Ball Hogs, who slid to 1-6.
