The public’s lack of awareness on the availability of their voter ID at the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) offices was the reason why an estimated 4.5-million voter ID remained unclaimed, poll body spokesman James Jimenez said on Friday.
Jimenez said that the Comelec has directed all of its field offices to post the list of the names of the unclaimed voters IDs outside local Comelec offices, barangay halls and other public places beginning this month.
“The Comelec deems the issuance and distribution of voter ID cards as a vital service to the public,” Jimenez said.
He said that the voter ID is a recognized identification by all government offices and banks in all legal transactions.
Earlier, the Comelec had launched the #VoterIDKo project for a more systematic way of distributing voter IDs.
To date, #VoterIDKo has facilitated the release of almost a thousand of voter IDs since it was launched on January 13, 2014.
