The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines will be sending a four-man team to the 2014 AIBA (International Boxing Association) Youth World Boxing Championships scheduled on April 10 to 25 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Promising pugs Daniel Maano, Hipolito Banal, Fresco Carpocia and Sonny Bernabe will represent the country in the prestigious world meet which is expected to lure more than 500 boxers from 100 countries.
The 10-day tournament serves as a qualifying for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games slated in August in Nanjing, China.
Meanwhile, London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga absorbed his first loss in the World Series of Boxing quarterfinal stage held at the Guba Olympic Complex in Azerbaijan.
Barriga, who represented Italia Thunder Boxing Team, lost via second round technical knockout-injury (TKO-I) to Khamza Nametov of Azerbajian Baku Fires in the light flyweight division.
Barriga sustained a cut on his right eyebrow, forcing Greek referee Evangelos Bougioukas to stop the fight.
Overall, the Azerbajian Baku Fires swept the Italia Thunder, 0-5, as four more boxers of the latter team also failed to score victories in their respective matches.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday (April 5) with the Italia Thunder in a must win situation, hoping to force a deciding third match in their best-of-three quarterfinal series.
