4 dead in botched mall supermarket robbery

AT least four persons were killed in a botched attempt to rob a Robinsons supermarket in Rosario, Pasig City on Saturday night.

Eastern Police Director Miguel Laurel said one of the robbers was killed, along with merchandiser Nonie Onas and security guards Melanie Velga and Frederick Perez, Jr.

Initial police investigation showed that Hernani Lupera, a former security guard in the supermarket, asked one employee to let him and his three companions in at 11 p.m.

The suspects declared a robbery when they reached the main office.

They later brought out Onas, Velga, Perez and information clerk Daisy Devanadera, who tried to fight them off, forcing the robbers to open fire.

But one of the security guards, Juanito Bordadora, managed to hit Lupera with a metal pipe repeatedly.

When the three robbers saw Lupera dead, they panicked and fled without taking anything.

Laurel said investigators are trying to determine if the incident was an inside job.

Pasig City police chief Senior Superintendent Mario Rariza Jr. said a footage of the CCTV camera showed four men entering the supermarket at 10:50 p.m. through the delivery bay.
