For the third straight year, four demonstration sports will be played in the 2016 Palarong Pambansa scheduled on April 10 to 16 at the state-of-the-art Albay Sports and Tourism Complex in Bicol.
These are billiards, futsal, wrestling and wushu as the Department of Education aims to discover promising talents in these events for future international competitions.
The Philippines has been dominating billiards in international tournaments having the likes of Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, Francisco ‘Django’ Bustamante, Dennis Orcollo, Alex Pagulayan, Ronnie Alcano and Lee Vann Corteza, among others.
Last year, the Western Visayas Region topped the overall medal tally in demonstration sports by winning seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals while the Cordillera Administrative Region placed second with 6-6-3 followed by the Ilocos Region (5-2-4), Davao Region (4-4-9), Central Visayas Region (3-5-3), Bicol Region (2-5-4), Soccsksargen Region (2-1-0), Central Luzon Region (2-0-3), National Capital Region (2-0-3), Eastern Visayas Region (1-3-10), Northern Mindanao Region (1-2-1) and Cagayan Valley Region (1-0-1).
DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali earlier said the department’s organizing committee will be meeting this year if the demonstration sports will be added as regular events next year.
