• 4 injured as Binay escort vehicle plunges into ravine


    Four staff members of Vice President Jejomar Binay were injured after their vehicle fell into a ravine in Ifugao province on Friday.

    Senior Supt. Edwin Butacan, director of the Cordillera Regional Highway Patrol Unit, identified the victims as Sgt. Danilo Tamo, driver, and his passengers Sgt. Alexander Sicat, Cpl. Alexander Solis, both security escorts of the Vice President, and his official photographer Ramon Campita.

    According to Butacan, the four injured were taken to the Good News Clinic for immediate treatment.

    Reports showed that the incident happened at around 11 a.m. while the convoy of Vice President Binay was traversing Barangay Mahhung in Banaue town. One of the vehicles, a Toyota Fortuner, suddenly fell into a ravine about 15 meters deep and rested on a creek.

    ”Our personnel from Ifugao, who were deployed, coordinated with the local police for the conduct of investigation,” said Butacan.

    Butacan said that the Vice President went on with his scheduled meetings in Ifugao and Nueva Vizcaya despite the incident.

    Binay’s media relations officer, Joey Salgago said the vice president was on his way to Banaue to turn over medical supplies and inaugurate a senior citizens’ building when the accident happened.

    An unfazed Binay leads today (March 15) the community walk around the Palaisdaan Tropical Resort in Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya. The event unreels at 6 a.m.

    By 11 a.m., he will turn over medical equipment and wheelchairs to the Bayombong Office of the Senior Citizens’ Affairs in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.

    Too, he will also turn over medical equipment and wheelchairs to the Aritao Office of the Senior Citizens’ Affairs in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya.
