• 400 families in Marikina evacuated as river swells

AT least 400 families in Marikina City were evacuated after the swollen Marikina River threatened to breach its banks on Monday morning.

Paul Sison, chief of the Marikina-Public Information Office, said 2,295 persons were staying in five evacuation centers.

The city’s evacuation centers are H. Bautista Elementary School (178 families), Malanday Elementary School (25), Bulelak in Brgy. Malanday (108), Filipinas Village basketball court in Barangay Malanday (32), and Nangka Elementary School (81).

The city’s Public Information Office earlier reported that the Marikina River reached as high as 16.1 meters at the height of the monsoon rains.

As of 8:50 a.m. Monday, the level had receded to 15.5 meters.

The river’s level is measured through a stream gauge located under the Marikina Bridge.
