The Bureau of Immigration (BI) nabbed a total of 46 foreigners–among them Chinese, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis–during a raid on a mall in Baclaran, Parañaque City, on Wednesday. After weeks of surveillance and intelligence work, authorities apprehended the foreigners for supposedly working illegally in the Philippines. “The foreigners were caught in the premises in the act of working as vendors in retail stores,” BI spokesman Elaine Tan said on Thursday. The BI team, together with operatives from the Philippine National Police-Regional Public Safety Battalion, brought the suspects to the BI main office in Manila for verification and inquest proceedings since they were arrested without a court warrant. Upon issuance of the charge for immigration violation, the foreigners shall undergo deportation proceedings to allow them to defend their case. “Pending deportation, the subjects shall be quarantined in our Warden’s Facility in Bicutan [Taguig City, Metro Manila], unless they are provisionally released on bail on meritorious grounds,” Tan said.
