The country’s top 48 young chess players will test their mettle in the 2015 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship in this weekend national finals at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.
“Magagaling ang mga bata na kasali ngayon [the young players participating are good],” said Grandmaster Eugene Torre, Asia’s first chess grandmaster, who was present during the first day of the meet.
Among top players competing in the seniors division are National Capital Region leg winner Marc Labog of Adamson University, Visayas topnotcher Adrian dela Cruz of Negros Oriental State U and Southern Mindanao champion John Ray Batucan from the University of Mindanao.
Competing in the juniors class are Julius Gonzales, Genesis Borromeo, Tristan Ibaon, Adrian Yulo and Dale Fernando while disputing the title in kiddies division are Jerome Aragones, Daniel Quizon and Justine Mordido.
Tight competition is also seen in the all-female category with Crissa Canada, Arvie Lozano, Jesca Docena, Laila Nadera, Rheam de Guzman and Marian Calimbo fighting for honors.
A Swiss Manager computerized pairing program was used to match up players.
