Participants plunge into action in last year’s Tri Ilocos Norte.

More than 150 triathletes will be vying for honors in the North: 4th Tri Ilocos Norte beginning today at the Playa Tropical Resort in Currimao, Ilocos Norte.

The first of the two-part series race aims to boosts tourism in Ilocos region through sports.

“Tri Ilocos Norte is more on sportourism because we are not just promoting the event but also the local tourism,” said TriSports marketing communications head Carlo Sampan.

Sampan said that this year’s race is much bigger than the previous three editions as it offers new courses for the participants.

“In terms of preparations, mas malaki ito. Ibinibigay natin ang total experience to the participants. We also have interesting courses and it is a breakaway from the previous race routes,” added Sampan.

The Tri Ilocos Norte event includes individual sprint (750-meter swim–20-kilo¬meter bike – 5-kilometer run), individual 51.5km (1.5km-40km-10km), individual 113km (2km- 90km- 21km) and 51.5km and 113km relay.

“Triathletes will pass through prime spots in Ilocos Norte like the Paoay Lake, Paoay Church and the white sand beaches of Currimao,” race director Mikey Chua said.

The tournament is backed by Northern Cement Corporation (NCC). NCC will be fielding its own team named NCC Tri Team, which is composed of three women who are professional triathletes.

“We partnered with TriSports two years now for TriIlocos and Tigasin Triathlon. Our motto in NCC is Tigasin (tough) and what is more tigasin than triathlon? You are doing swim, bike and run. Doing those things and enduring obstacles will make you a tigasin athlete,” NCC Stakeholders Communication Assistant Frances Celine Buenaventura said.

“What we feel in NCC is that, Triathlon would go hand-in-hand with the same mantra or same belief we have, which is tigasin,” she added.

Philippine Volcanoes member Chris Everingham will serve as emcee of the event.

The 2nd Tigasin Triathlon, the second part of the series, will take place at Coco’s Beach Resort in Bolinao, Pangasinan on May 14.

To kick off the Tigasin trail series, NCC’s Tigasin Tri Team and Trisports Solutions organizing team had a weeklong road show in January.

Various triathlon teams from Pampanga, La Union, Pangasinan, Baguio, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte will be joining the event that aims to strengthen the different triathlon communities in the Northern areas of Luzon.

After the Northern Luzon races, Trisports will hold four activities namely Turbo Sprint at Riviera Sports and Country Club in Cavite, Biathle and Aquathlon at PhilSports Complex in Pasig City and Enduro Sprint at Canyon Cove Resort in Batangas.
