A 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit Ilocos Norte on Monday, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) on Monday. The epicenter was located at 29 kilometers Southwest of Burgos, Ilocos Norte Philvolcs Director Renato Solidum announced in an interview.
The earthquake occurred at 1:56 p.m. with a depth of 25 kilometers, the institute’s Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division said. The origin of the earthquake is tectonic, Philvolcs added.
Intensity 5 was recorded in Pasugin, Ilocos Norte while Intensity 4 was located in Sarrat, Laoag City, and Paoay in Ilocos Norte. Intensity 3 was recorded in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Claveria in Cagayan Province and Bangui, Ilocos Norte.
Santa in Ilocos Sur together with Callao, Penablanca, and Calayan in Cagayan Province experienced Intensity 2. Baguio City felt Intensity 1.
Solidum said that the earthquake will not cause any possible damage but aftershocks will be expected in affected areas.
