BAGUIO CITY: A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Cagayan at noon on Saturday.
Though no huge damage has been recorded as of this writing, the tremor caused panic among residents who were having lunch when the quake rocked the provinces.
Located 40 kilometers north, 84 degrees west of the capital city Laoag in Ilocos Norte, the jolt was tectonic in origin according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). It originated 10 kilometers deep.
The shaking was felt at intensity 5 in Pasuquin, also in Ilocos Norte and Burgos in Ilocos Sur. Intensity 4 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, while Intensity 3 was felt in Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Pamplona, Cagayan.
It was the strongest earthquake so far this year in the lowland provinces. Officials are yet to ascertain damages in various towns where the quake was felt strongest.
