Five suspected car thieves were killed after they traded shots with members of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) in Barangay Payatas, Quezon City, on Friday morning.
Police Chief Insp. Richard Ian Ang said they learned about the incident after receiving a radio call that a Karol-Nick taxi (UWP 489) was reported to have been forcibly taken from its driver.
According to the driver, Diosdado Oro, three of the suspects boarded the vehicle at the Jack Liner Terminal in Cubao, Quezon City, and ordered him to drop them off at Barangay Loyola Heights, also in Quezon City.
While they were traversing Kalayaan Avenue, one of the suspects pointed a gun at him, telling him to pull over.
The suspects then wrapped Oro’s mouth and hands with masking tape and threw him inside the taxi’s compartment.
The driver was thrown out of the taxi on Road 7 in Project 6, Quezon City.
Oro immediately reported the incident to Batasan Police Station 6.
The QCPD police director, Chief Supt. Edgardo Tinio, said it was around 9 a.m. when his men began tailing the suspects’ black Isuzu Sportivo after spotting it without a license plate along Litex Road on Commonwealth Avenue.
The policemen noticed that the Sportivo had been following the taxi that was reportedly stolen from Oro.
They attempted to call the attention of the suspects, who, however, began shooting at them.
When the smoke cleared, the suspects, who were armed with improvised sub-machine guns, lay dead.
Police were able to recover Oro’s taxi.
They are still establishing the identities of the five suspects.
