AGOO, LA UNION: A long-standing grudge between relatives ended on Tuesday night in Barangay Capas here with five people dead, including a 3-year-old child. Initial police investigation showed that the shooting and hacking rampage happened shortly after the family buried one of their relatives. Agoo Police Chief Artemio Infante said most of the victims were drinking at the roadside when suspects Demetrio Gayo and his sons Oscar, Noel and Ferdinand came and challenged them to a fight. Noel, using a caliber .45 pistol, then started shooting victims Reynaldo Refuerzo and his 3-year-old daughter Mary Anne; Gil Cabilitazan and Zosimo Fontanilla, residents of Capas, and their cousin Gilberto Cecilio of Dagupan City. Infante added that suspects Demetrio, Oscar and Ferdinand took turns at hacking victims Gilmar Cabilitazan, Rodel Refuerzo, and Benjie Tabunia. All three were seriously wounded and rushed to the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center for treatment. Witnesses say the suspects are at-large after escaping toward a mountainous portion in Agoo. Infante told The Manila Times that the family squabble stemmed from an orchard, owned by the Emperador family, which is being taken care of by one of the victims. Agoo Mayor Sandra Eriguel expressed sadness over the incident, especially with the inclusion of the 3-year-old girl as she ordered a manhunt operation against the suspects. The child was sitting on the lap of her uncle Rodel when the shooting occurred. Complaints are being readied against the suspects before the Prosecutor’s Office.
